Radiators heat a room by heating the air around the radiator when the warm air rises from the radiator it travels up to the ceiling displacing the cold air and then circulating the heated air throughout the room.
Radiator covers can distribute the heated air more efficiently than an uncovered radiator. Instead of the heat going directly to the ceiling, with the proper backing it pushes the air into the living space and up to the ceiling.
